Meet Duncan & Jakida

Duncan Smith

Duncan Smith was born in Wiradjuri country, Wellington NSW. Duncan spent his younger years learning his culture and painting with his elders and members of his family, elders in Duncan's community took him hunting and gathering and taught him cultural dances, he has a strong family connection with his mother who taught him about art he is now made his own connections painting with acrylic paint and ochre. Duncan’s paintings reflect his connection to the land. He runs a very successful business in teaching his culture through arts and dancing and is very well respected in Canberra and NSW. Duncan artwork can be seen throughout Canberra and NSW with pieces in parliament house the National Museum of Australia, embassies and in various schools.

Through art, dance and music, Duncan has been an instrumental role model to the Indigenous community. Since establishing Wiradjuri Echoes Consultancy in 1998, Duncan and his team have worked hard towards reconciliation and equality. Duncan won the 2003 NAIDOC Artist of the Year Award, Dare to Lead Education Award 2009, Friends of Education Award 2011, Ngunnawal Centre University of Canberra Award 2007, Senior Citizen Centre Award for Sharing Culture 2016 and the 2016 Order of Australian Medal. Duncan is also an ambassador for canteen for kids. 

Jakida Smith

Jakida smith grew up dancing with her family! She works alongside her father, Duncan, sharing aboriginal culture through art, story and dance. She is dedicated to teaching the next generation to be strong and proud of their culture. Jakida is passionate about making a positive impact within the Wiradjuri culture and making sure we all play a part in carrying on long-lived traditions. Through her culture, she has met and performed for several officials, including the King and Queen of Sweden, William and Kate, Prime Ministers and Governor Generals. Most of all, Jakida is passionate about teaching kids. Jakida was recently announced as runner up in the ABC Spirits Awards for her work in the community. Jakida has won, alongside her siblings, Canberra Youth Awards and has also featured in the Canberra times for International Women’s Day.
